Apple Pie Filling

Get excited! Apple season is upon us! Today, we are cooking up a pot of easy apple pie filling to enjoy as the star flavor in various dishes

  • 5 medium-size apples peeled, core removed, sliced
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup granulated white sugar
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla
  • ¼ cup cornstarch


  • Pour water and lemon juice into a medium size sauce pan or pot. As the apple slices are being sliced, place them into the pot.
    5 medium-size apples, 2 cups water, 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • Add the cinnamon, nutmeg and salt to the pot. Create a cornstarch slurry by mixing the corn starch with a couple of teaspoons of cold water. Pour the cornstarch slurry into the pot. Stir all ingredients together with a wooden spoon until well combined.

  • Cover the pot with a lid and bring to a boil. Reduce to a medium heat, add the granulated white sugar and brown sugar. Stir with a wooden spoon until the sugar is dissolved.

  • Add the vanilla extract and simmer for 8-10 minutes.

  • Pierce an apple slice with a fork to check for tenderness. Once tender, remove the pot from the burner and allow cooling for 5 minutes. The filling will thicken as it cools.
